What Type of Mouthwash Is Best for My Teeth?

If You Have Children

The American Dental Association recommends that children under the age of six not be allowed to use mouthwash. Children under six may swallow mouthwash instead of spitting it out, and they may ingest too much fluoride as well.

If your child is six and older, you can use a mouthwash for children that contains no alcohol and has safe fluoride amounts. Children benefit from mouthwash because they are not the best toothbrushers and are likely to miss some teeth during brushing and flossing, especially their back teeth. Children who brush, floss, and use mouthwash for children are less likely to get cavities.

Need Whitening?

Are you are looking to whiten your teeth? There are several whitening mouthwashes you can try. If you are interested in whitening your teeth several shades, you can combine toothpaste, mouthwash, and whitening strips to really boost your smile.

Have Gum Disease?

If you are suffering from gum disease, you will want to find a mouthwash to help you fight it. Several types of mouthwash contain hydrogen peroxide or chlorhexidine, which are great for tackling periodontitis or gingivitis, the two types of periodontal disease. You will want to check carefully for gum disease-fighting chemicals. Just because a mouthwash says it helps fight gum disease does not mean it has the chemicals you need.

What About Halitosis?

Many adults struggle with chronic bad breath, also called halitosis. Luckily, dentists and dental companies know a lot about halitosis, including the agents that can improve bad breath, such as xylitol, baking soda, and mint. You may want to make sure that your new mouthwash does not contain alcohol because that tends to dry your mouth out.
