My Gums Are Bleeding. What Does That Mean?

Man smiling after dental exam at Cooley Smiles in Lynnwood, WAWe understand that bleeding gums is a cause for concern, and we understand your worries. However, most people have bleeding gums from time to time. If you are concerned about your bleeding gums, here are some clues to help you determine what the problem may be.

Overbrushing or Overflossing

One of the most common reasons you may have bleeding gums is because you may be brushing a bit too hard or using a toothbrush that is too hard for your teeth and gums. Be sure that when you brush, you are brushing gently using a soft-bristled toothbrush. If your gums are bleeding when you floss, you may need to floss a bit more gently. You can also switch to a different kind of floss, such as a flosser with a handle or a water flosser.

Trauma, Dental Procedure, or Surgery

Your gums are like any other body part. Trauma can make them bruise and bleed. If you have had recent surgery or procedures on your teeth and gums, you may experience bleeding gums for a few days. For example, if you have recently had a deep gum cleaning, you may experience bleeding gums for a few days.

Gum Disease

Perhaps the most common reason for bleeding gums is gum disease. If you have the earliest stage of gum disease, one of the first signs is bleeding gums. This is a sign of irritation and early infection from bacteria.

The good news is that if you have the early stage of gum disease, your disease can be treated successfully. The best way to combat gum disease is to brush and floss each time you eat. Also, you need to make sure you have our dentist check your teeth and gums for signs of infection or inflammation. The more frequently you have your dental checkups, the better our dentist can keep track of the progress of your gum disease.
