Molars are the largest and thickest teeth because they do a lot of the heavy lifting to crush and grind food so it can be digested. If your molars hurt, that can cause real pain and possible bite issues. Here is some information about what your molar pain could mean.
You Could Have a Cavity
If one of your molars hurts, you may have a cavity. Molars are especially prone to cavities because their biting surfaces are uneven and contain grooves. Also, because molars are located in the back of the mouth, they are the hardest teeth to reach with toothbrushes and toothpaste. Because of where molars are located, it can be difficult to spot shallow dental caries in your molars before they become cavities. One of the first signals you may have that your molar has a cavity is pain.
Luckily, if you have pain from a cavity in one of your molars, it can be fixed quickly and easily by our dentist. The dentist drills a hole in your molar to eliminate the cavity and fills the empty space so that your tooth will be stronger. Once the numbness wears off, you will be ready to chew again in no time.
Do You Grind Your Teeth?
Another reason your molars may be hurting is because you clench or grind your teeth at night, which is called bruxism. If you clench your teeth, you put an enormous amount of pressure on your molars, which can cause inflammation and pain. If you grind your teeth, you are rubbing your molars against each other, which can cause them to crack or break. If you do have bruxism, one of the best ways you can get your molars to stop hurting is to get a night guard. Night guards are made of either hard or soft plastic that prevent you from clenching or grinding your teeth.
