How to Detect Cavities Between Your Teeth

Posted on 1/15/2025 by Cooley Smiles Lynwood
Patient with fillings atCooley Smiles in Lynnwood, WACavities, also known as dental caries, are tiny holes that form in the hard tissues of your teeth. While they can occur on any tooth surface, they're especially common between teeth. These "interproximal" cavities can be tricky to detect in their early stages, but with proper oral care practices and regular dental checkups, you can increase your chances of catching them before they cause serious damage.

How Do Cavities Form?

Cavities are caused by a combination of factors, including:

•  Plaque buildup: Plaque is a sticky film that forms on your teeth when food and bacteria combine. If plaque isn't removed regularly, it can harden into tartar, which makes it even harder to remove.
•  Sugary and acidic foods: Bacteria in plaque feed on sugars and acids from the foods you eat. These byproducts of bacterial activity can erode your tooth enamel, making it more susceptible to cavities.
•  Poor oral hygiene: Brushing and flossing regularly are essential for removing plaque and food particles that can contribute to cavities.
•  Lack of fluoride: Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and make it more resistant to decay.

How to Detect Cavities Between Your Teeth

Since interproximal cavities often develop between your teeth, they're not always visible during a visual exam. However, there are several signs and symptoms that can indicate the presence of a cavity between your teeth:

•  Sensitivity to cold, heat, or sweets: When a cavity reaches the inner layer of your tooth (dentin), it can cause sensitivity to hot, cold, or sugary foods and drinks.
•  Pain when biting: If a cavity has progressed significantly, it may cause pain when you bite down.
•  Food getting stuck between your teeth: Cavities can create rough surfaces where food particles can get lodged, causing discomfort.
•  Black or brown spots on your teeth: These discolorations may be a sign of a cavity, especially between your teeth where they may not be readily visible.
•  Changes in the texture of your teeth: You may notice that your teeth feel rough or pitted in areas where cavities are forming.

What to Do if You Suspect a Cavity

If you experience any of the signs or symptoms of cavities between your teeth, it's important to see your dentist as soon as possible. Early detection and treatment can help prevent the cavity from growing larger and causing more serious problems.

Your dentist will examine your teeth and perform an X-ray, if necessary, to confirm the presence of a cavity. If a cavity is found, your dentist will recommend a treatment plan, which may involve a filling, crown, or other restorative dentistry procedures.

Tips for Preventing Cavities Between Your Teeth

The best way to prevent cavities between your teeth is to practice good oral hygiene and see your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. Here are some specific tips:

•  Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Be sure to brush for at least two minutes each time, paying special attention to the areas between your teeth.
•  Floss daily. Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach.
•  Use an antiseptic mouthwash. Mouthwash can help kill bacteria and reduce plaque buildup.
•  Limit your intake of sugary and acidic foods and drinks.
•  See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. Your dentist can check for cavities and other dental problems early on, when they're easier to treat.

By following these tips, you can help keep your teeth healthy and free of cavities, including those hidden between your teeth.
